Gastown
One walks the cobbled pavements on Water Street, and finds ancient streetlamps, maple trees, and handicrafts stores on each side. This is Gastown, the cradle of Vancouver, as well as the most distinctive cultural heritage in Vancouver.
Gastown 's origin dated back to 1867. At that time, a man called Gassy J. Deighton built the first hotel in Vancouver at the mouth of Burrard. He earned fame as "Gassy God", for being warmhearted and excellent in speech. Soon after Gassy opened his second hotel in the vicinity, Gastown became the largest city in Vancouver. Locals even named it Later on, to commemorate Gassy, people call it "Gastown"
Unfortunately, a fire in 1886 nearly destroyed the town. After the fire, everyone waited for the rebuilding process and local stores began to move out. Gastown declined to obscurity. Only the work of warm-hearted citizens prodded the provincial government to assign Gastown as a culture-preserving district in 1970. After renovation, the Gastown, the one we see today, is an architectural replica of the old 19th century town, with handicrafts, antiques, pottery stores, shops, restaurants, and pubs standing on each side. Everything in it tells a story of old Vancouver, worthy of appreciation.
The street running between Gastown and Chinatown, dark and dirty, expresses another side of Vancouver. The jobless strollers and fixers gathering on this street contrast sharply with the prosperous sight in Gastown. Probably it reminded residents of the poor and painful life they once had and encouraged them to treasure the present and the future life.
Steam Clock
The first steam clock in the world is in Gastown, Vancouver. It's the most important landmark of Gastown. Located in the junction of Cambie and Water Street, every fifteen minutes the clock lets off puffs of steams, siren ringing. Many visitors come to take photos of the steam clock.for a movie of Gastown
Hotel Europe
Hotel Europe is of antique European style, one of the many landmarks in Gastown. Opposite Hotel Europe is Maple Tree Square, where one can find the statue of Gassy J. Deighton.
