Oklahoma City Overview
Oklahoma City is at the center of an emerging spirit of growth that has revitalized and transformed this once frontier town into the envy of the Southwest. Back in December of 1993, the residents of Oklahoma City voted to invest a quarter of a billion dollars to renovate the downtown entertainment district and to promote tourism. Known as the MAPS project, Oklahoma City has completed a mile long pedestrian canal meandering through turn-of-the-century industrial buildings and warehouses, called Bricktown. Residents and tourists alike enjoy spending a summer evening cheering for their top ranked AAA baseball team, the Oklahoma Redhawks at the newly constructed Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark. The completely renovated Bricktown arts and entertainment district is easily accessible on a water taxi or travel the vintage-style trolley transportation system, known as the Oklahoma Spirit. The Myriad Botanical Gardens feature a beautifully lush landscape winding around a picturesque sunken lake. If you haven't been to Oklahoma City lately, you will be surprised at the transformation.
The Cowboy Culture in Oklahoma City is rich and alive with many places to visit and annual events to give a taste of the culture to its visitors. From the National Cowboy Hall of Fame to the Oklahoma Opry, there are many opportunities for anyone to enjoy the hospitality and personality of the Cowboy way in Oklahoma City. Unlike other large cities, Oklahoma City has a relaxed, laid back charisma that makes you feel instantly a part of the community spirit. OKC is the place where lifelong friends are made, and neighbor helping neighbor is firmly rooted in the heritage of its residents. Despite its large size and bustling commercial economy, Oklahoma City does not suffer from traffic congestion that has plagued cities of comparable size. OKC is the type of city that just feels like home.
Although experiencing the growing pains of sudden and rapid expansion, Oklahoma City maintains its frontier integrity and traditional values. Downtown OKC is the focal point of much of the revitalization - the Myriad Botanical Gardens are transformed every Christmas season into a magical winter wonderland of twinkling lights and decoration. Acquiring its name from Oklahoma's famous red earth brick, Bricktown is a renovated warehouse district that houses numerous restaurants, clubs, galleries and shops - the perfect place to entertain guests or just get out for the weekend. The newly renovated Civic Center is a stunning performance arts center and home to both Ballet Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra. And lastly, the all-new Sports Arena Complex will serve as a venue for hockey and other sporting events.
With summer temperatures averaging in the mid 80s, the weather is just right for a jaunt down historic route 66 or a round of golf. The International Finals Rodeo is a good place to get your feet wet in the rich cowboy heritage of Oklahoma City. The Redbud Classic and the Women's College World Series are two popular events that celebrate the athlete in all of us, while Balloonfest features hot air balloon races and skydiving events to the delight of children and grown-ups alike. Remington Park is another must-see OKC favorite featuring all the fast action of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing, or take the short trip to the Oklahoma City Zoological Park - acknowledged as one of the ten best zoos in the United States. Finally, no trip to Oklahoma City would be complete without attending Oklahoma City All-College Basketball Tournament, which is the oldest basketball tournament in the world and featuring all the excitement of nationally ranked hoops action. Hockey enthusiasts can catch a game of the city's minor league hockey Oklahoma City Blazers.
Just north of downtown, residents enjoy sailing or jogging around beautiful Lake Hefner. Other lakes, such as Arcadia Lake, Lake Overholser and Lake Thunderbird abound with opportunities for water sports, fishing, picnicking and even camping. Travel to nearby historic Guthrie and enjoy all the sights and sounds of old west nostalgia. For a more bohemian environment, stroll down to the Paseo District, Oklahoma's artists' community full of coffeehouses, shops and fledgling artists. So whether you're window shopping in the Paseo District or visiting the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City has something to offer to everyone.
