I thought I was being harsh, but... James Monaghan writes:

1. World's worst drivers.
2. World's rudest people.
3. Police state, there are more laws for what you can't -- as opposed to what you can -- do; the state puts a damper on everything.

4. World's worst for tolls, some of the highest in the nation.
5. Proper English is foreign to this state.
6. Air quality is the worst, especially in the Central New Jersey area.
7. Worst politicians, so crooked that when the die they will have to be screwed into the ground.

More recently, he added:
1. Road barriers, when I lived in N.J. we called it the Berlin Wall.
2. Jug handle turnoffs, you wait forever for a light to change, and it's a short one when it does.
3. Snow plows jamming your driveway with snow from the street.
4. Again jug handles when it snowed they were never cleared out properly, it was slip and slide all the way.
5. Snow removal was a joke. It stayed in the streets until spring.
6. Chemicals dumped into the road ate the bottom of your car away.
7. The good ole Jersey shore: polluted waters, garbage on the beaches, medical waste.
8. Beach fees to use the beach, plus parking fees.
9. Dirty streets.
10. Signs galore to tell you what you can't do on the beach. Have a nice day, enjoy yourself, just sit there and don't make a move, big brother is watching you every move to break a rule.
11. Food is the worst, help is rude. When you send something back that isn't right and are there to hustle you out the door when you sit there trying to digest the pig slop that was served.
12. Another thing: it seems people have this trouble with their middle finger, I don't know whether it is stuck in that position or they are saying they are number one.

The Country's Best Corn and Tomatoes

I'd like to suggest a site called New Jersey Garden Network. In all seriousness, this is a really informative site. Here's the official description:
New Jersey Garden Network is a comprehensive source of information and advice about gardening in NJ. Offers tips and gardening activities calendar, a guide to botanical gardens in NJ, upcoming gardening seminars at Rutgers and Cook College. Dept of Agriculture provides information about weekly Farmers Markets with "Jersey Fresh" produce. Includes NJ directory of professional landscape services.

The State's Worst Radio Station

Clearly, New Jersey 101.5 pretty much a non-stop selection of unimaginative music, ads, and right-wing know-nothing talk radio. This is not New York and not Philadelphia. We only wish it wasn't New Jersey, either.

If it weren't for the traffic reports, probably no one would ever listen to it. The state's most egregious commentators? Deminsky and Doyle, whose high point is be rude to any caller who dares to disagree with them.

The World's Worst Traffic Engineers

For the most densely-populated state in the nation, New Jersey has some of the world's worst traffic engineering. New Jersey is responsible for one of the ugliest traffic inventions: the "New Jersey divider," that concrete barrier that now adorns the middle of every major highway and an increasing number of "dualized" local roads. Too low to prevent the glare of oncoming headlights, of course. Any color you like, as long as it's gray. And naturally it's designed to divide towns, prevent left turns, and demolish both you and your vehicle if you run into one.

Apart from the abysmal design of the highways, there's the total aversion to pedestrians and cyclists in the planning departments of almost every city and town. Not incidentally, NJ has the highest per capita record of pedestrian fatalities in the nation.

The Country's Most Corrupt Civic Officials
The newspapers publish long lists of those indicted for bribery. And those are the ones who are stupid enough to get caught.

The Country's Worst Environmental Disasters
New Jersey has the country's largest number of Superfund sites, and also has some of the nation's most pointless environmental legislation as well.

Most Overplayed Historical Event
The dubious conviction of Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby is re-enacted each year at the Flemington courthouse.

Best Roadside Pancake House

T.J.'s, on Route 202 in Flemington had the imagination to go through the archives of the Hunterdon County Democrat and embed 19th-century clippings and photos in the plastic tabletops, giving a greater insight into the history of this area than much of the commercial restoration in the town of Flemington proper.
