Hartford retains a significant employment base despite steady downsizing
of several leading sectors over the past decade. State government, insurance,
manufacturing, and health care remain the major anchors of the city's economic
base. . The city's economic performance continues to lag most northeast
cities, with employment growth in the city stagnant and still well below
(9%) the city's pre-recession employment peak. Unemployment rates have steadily
declined, falling to 5.1% through March 2000 from a peak of 12.3% in 1992.
The city and the state have actively pursued a variety of economic development
initiatives that should have long-term positive implications for city employment
levels and generally improve economic momentum.
