Travel at Buffalo
Buffalo: the land of snow, Niagara Falls and warm summer afternoons.
For various climatic reasons, the most popular time to visit the western
New York area is during the summer months. However, there are a wide variety
of activities scheduled throughout the year that will delight visitors
of all ages.
Spring
Visit
Niagara Falls
With the arrival of spring comes plenty of outdoor events in the Buffalo
area. Touring companies -- which specialize in the Niagara Falls region
-- begin their season each year in April with extended service through
October. Visitors can check out one of the world's most spectacular natural
phenomena aboard a cozy steam ship with informative tour guides narrating
the journey through the misty passages near the falls. Did you know that
over 75,000 gallons of water flow over American Falls every second? Now,
that's spectacular!
Summer
Taste
of Buffalo
Buffalo has over 2,000 restaurants, and one of the best times to visit
the city is during the Taste of Buffalo festival, which gives you the
opportunity to sample some terrific local cuisine. This festival is scheduled
each year during the month of July. It not only offers taste-testing opportunities
for extremely nominal prices, but also plenty of live music and children's
entertainment, including magicians, clowns, jugglers and an interactive
playground. Taste of Buffalo is the second-largest food festival in the
US and has been named one of Western New York's most popular outdoor summer
festivals.
Autumn/Fall
Buffalo's
Fall Foliage
The striking reds, golds and oranges of the autumn season bring many visitors
to the region surrounding Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Not only do visitors
come to gaze at the natural beauty of the area, they also come for a little
Halloween-style entertainment. Pumpkinville has become an extremely favored
location for visitors and locals to Western New York, particularly during
this season of crunchy leaves and crisp afternoons. There are thousands
upon thousands of pumpkins -- of every size and shape -- and plenty of
seasonal homemade goodies, craft items, a corn maze and a haunted cemetery.
Other Halloween events that always seem to draw the crowds include the
Catacombs & Nightmare on Main Street in downtown Buffalo, the Fright
Fest at Six Flags, Historic Hauntings at Old Fort Niagara and Haunted
Forest Hayride at Becker Farms.
Winter
Blizzardly
Buffalo
The winter months in the Buffalo area are often filled with plenty of
fluffy, white, powdery snow due to the lake-effect storms, caused by the
surrounding Great Lakes of Erie and Ontario. Each year Niagara Falls is
decorated with holiday attire for the Christmas season, beginning just
before Thanksgiving and extending through New Year's Eve. Thousands of
tiny twinkling lights dot the snow-covered acreage, and classic characters
beckon visitors along Storybook Lane. The sound of the crashing falls
is complemented by the illumination of the frosty, thunderous water with
red and green lights.
