Economy of Baltimore

Baltimore is an international port and an industrial giant.

The port of Baltimore receives ocean liners from many nations. It ranks as one of the largest ports in the United States. Goods are transferred between ships and railroad cars for transport to and from the interior of the United States. Much of the cargo passing through Baltimore's docks is bulk commodities. Grain, coal, and coke are major exports, while iron ore and oil are imported. Thousands of Japanese and European automobiles are brought into the United States through specially constructed piers.

Southbound ships sail 165 miles (265 kilometers) through Chesapeake Bay to reach the Atlantic Ocean. Northbound vessels use a shortcut to the Atlantic by way of the 17-mile (27-kilometer) Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, which cuts through the peninsula between Chesapeake Bay and the estuary of the Delaware River.

The metal, chemical, clothing, automobile-assembly, and canning industries are among the city's most important. Other industries produce heavy equipment, electrical machinery, venetian blinds, glass, and beer. Industrial parks surround the city.

Shipbuilding is an industry for which Baltimore has long been famous, from the clipper ships of the 1800s to the supertankers of the 1980s. Huge spice, meat-packing, and cardboard carton factories have been in operation since the 19th century. Rockets and missiles are among the newer products of a city that has long produced military hardware.
