Dr. Gang Yu

He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Wuhan University, China in 1982.After graduation, he went to Cornell University through the CUSPEA program. After several years of training in theoretical physics which led to his M.S., he found that my real career interest was not in pure science and manipulation of mathematics, instead he was more in favor of solving complex practical problems, and to interact directly with the real-world. This never-ending thoughts resulted in his transfer to The Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. Three more years of intensive study and research in Decision Sciences not only rewarded him a Ph.D. degree, but also benefited him with career connections, problem solving skills and preparation for real-world challenges. he started teaching in the Graduate School of Business, University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and stayed in Austin long enough to contract all possible local allergies, but not long enough to become a cowboy or Texan, yet. Currently, he is Professor at the Department of Management Science and Information Systems, and Director at the Center for Management of Operations and Logistics.

His major research interests include operations research, management science and their industrial and financial applications. Many of his research projects involve development of advanced optimization-based decision support systems. These are reflected from his Research Publications.

He is offering several graduate and undergraduate courses in Integer Programming, Optimization I, Optimization II, and Algorithm Design and Implementations.

He has also been engaged in extensive consulting activities for numerous U.S. major corporations and government agencies including IBM, American Airlines, United Airline, Electronic Data Systems, Tracor Applied Sciences, Continental Airlines, U.S. Navy, etc. Several decision support systems that he have built for the corporations are currently in production to support their decisions in planning and in real-time operations control.

He enjoy all kinds of entertainment forms including basketball, bridge, Go, pingpong, karaokee, museums, and other games. He is a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL, and the San Antonio Spurs and the NBA. He seldom miss their important actions. Needless to say, he is also a fan of the Longhorns.

He especially love the city of Austin. The city and its culture have their charm. However, He would attribute the most happiness he gain from being here to his friends. They keep his spirits high, his stress low,his environment amicable, his life easier, his thoughts vivid, his games challenging, his holidays and weekends filled with fun and joy.
