People
Austin's population is as diverse as its history. Having flown under six
different flags, the Lone Star State boasts residents with ethnic backgrounds
ranging from Mexican to German to Alsatian. In fact, the institute of Texan
Cultures in San Antonio documents more than 30 ethnic groups. many of are
which are represented int he city of Austin.
The influence of Texas' southern neighbor is strongly felt in Austin, where
many citizens trace their ancestry to Hispanic roots. It's not uncommon
to hear Spanish spoken anywhere in the city. The city celebrates Mexican
holidays such as Cinco de Mayo, the May fifth victory over French troops
by the small Mexican army, with as much exuberance as it bestows upon other
festive days.
It's also not uncommon to see memgers of Austin's divers population side
by side throughoutthe city. for example, you might see a lobbyist in a
three-piece suit next to a person who's obviously a frequent visitor to
one of the city's many tattoo and body-piercing parlors. All of Austin's
population comes together at the many coffeehouses, Tex-Mex restaurants,
and local bars to partake of the food, music, and fun.
A sence of good-naturedness permeates Austin, from its nightlife to its
festivals and out doorrecreation. May be it's the college population,
which tops 50,000 students, that gives the city its casual feel. Maybe
it's the live music industry, which has make this city a haven for fans
and performers alike. Or maybe it's just the geography: Austin is situated
on a downtown lake and perched at the edge of a rembling Hill Country lake
that offers everthing from eindsurfing to nude sunbathing.
Sure, the city is home to both high-tech industry and countless state
officials, but residents will use any excuseto toss off the ties and
formal attire. They con hippie costumers for an annual party in Pease
Park to celebrate, believe it or not, the birthday of Eeyore, pal of
Winnie the Pooh. And those costumes are just a dress rehearsal for
the Halloween party that takes place on Sixth Street, which attracts
as many as70,000 merrymakers.
At night, the clubs are the place to be. But during the daylight hours
Austin shows off her beauty at places like the shores of Town lake,
the clear waters of Barton Springs swimming hole, and the manicured
lawn of the Captol. Regardless of political interest, many Austinites
who work downtown like to sneak off to the Capitol grounds for a picnic
lunch. Sitting out on the rolling lawn under tall oaks, feeding squirrels
and watching the flurry of legislative comings and going provides
one of the best shows in town.
In the late afternoon hours, locals grab their sneakers and head to Zilker
Park of Town Lake's shores for a jog of just a leisurely walk. When the
sun sets on Summer days, attention turns to Congress Avenue Bridge, location
of the country's largest unban colony of Mexican free-tailed bats. The bats
make their nightly exodus after sunset to feed on insects in the Hill Country
and the Austin area.
Dressing
What to wear? Fashionwise, Austin is exceedingly informal. Just about anything
goes so long as you won't be cited for indecent expsure. Visitor can hardly go
wrong! the city is a mix of junior students, college students, exhippies who
hate to dress up, style-conscious yuppies who love a casualchic look, and
traditionalists who won't go out without a coat and tie. At any event or eating
extablishment all of the above will be represented; there are few places in
Austin where you'd feed uncomfortably dressed.
Jeans, shorts, T-shirts, camp shirts, sandals, and sneakers are legion depending
upon the weather, not the time of year. Most restaurants really expect you to
leave your dress-up clothes at home. You wear what suits you-that's part of
what being in a laid-back means. Just don't get so laid back that you ignore the
health code-shirts and shoes must be worn at all times in eating establishemts.
Weatherwise, in spring, summer, and fall, cottons, shorts, short sleeves, and
cool dresses are suitable. Wintertime night necessitate a months when a heavy
coat might be a good idea. An umbrella is useful for the few rainy days.
