Albuquerque Aquarium: Our aquarium in the desert introduces you to rarely seen aquatic species and habitats as the Aquarium story line follows a drop of water downriver from the headwaters of the Rio Grande to the Gulf of Mexico 1,185 miles away. Rio Grande Botanic Garden: Located just across the plaza from the Aquarium, the Rio Grande Botanic Garden offers a pleasant alternative to that hectic day of sightseeing. Visitors tour formal walled gardens that illustrate traditional Spanish-Moorish and English landscape design in tile, ironwork, plantings and water features. Contemporary glass conservatories showcase plants of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts of North America in one wing and plants from the world's Mediterranean climates in the other. Rio Grande Zoo: Exhibits include giraffes, emus, Komodo dragons, white rhinos, koalas, elephants (and many more) in species-specific habitats. The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology University of New Mexico, holds over 10 million individual items in its archaeological, ethnological, archival, photo and skeletal collections. The collections come from all parts of the world, but have a Southwestern emphasis. The Maxwell is the only museum in the Southwest whose mission encompasses the entire history of mankind and culture around the world. Located on the University of New Mexico Campus. Founded in 1963, the University Art Museum maintains three facilities. University Art Museum, located in the Center for the Arts at Central and Cornell NE, houses a significant collection of photography, prints and drawings, 19th and 20th century painting and sculpture, Spanish Colonial and Old Master artworks, and the Tamarind Institute Print Archive. The photography collection is the largest and most diverse collection owned by any university museum in the US and is housed in the Print Study Room, which is open to the public by appointment. Gallery talks are presented at 5:30pm on Tues during the academic year. On the first Tues of each month, the talks are given at the Jonson Gallery. Tues-Fri 9am-4pm, Sun 1-4pm.
